1.What is The Pinhole Surgical Technique?

Unlike traditional surgical gum procedures, the pinhole process does not require the removal of soft tissue to be transplanted to the gums. Developed by Dr. John Chao, this proven procedure extends the existing healthy gum tissue back over the exposed roots of your teeth. Dr. Stern received special training and has the experience that allows our Philadelphia practice to offer the pinhole technique for those that are candidates for the procedure.

When undergoing the Pinhole Technique, Dr. Stern needs only make a small punch-like incision in the gums. Specialized tools are then used to reshape and extend your gums to cover the root structure. Due to the simple nature of the treatment, there is also no need for sedation or general anesthesia.

The pinhole procedure has a short recovery period, with results sometimes being seen within an hour of treatment. Since the procedure does not require the use of surgical incisions or sutures, improved comfort during recovery from treatment is well-appreciated by patients.

While an excellent alternative to traditional grafting methods, the Pinhole Technique is not right for everyone. Candidates for pinhole would have enough healthy gum tissue to promote new gum growth and healing. Excessive gum recession may not be treatable through this procedure and would be better served through traditional tissue grafting techniques. Dr. Stern listens carefully to our patients’ concerns and circumstances and will recommend the most appropriate course of treatment.
