Invisalign Q&A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a unique treatment system for malocclusion (crooked teeth or bite issues). Just as with traditional metal braces, the Invisalign system moves your teeth gradually into optimal positions over time.

Traditional braces accomplish this goal by fixing metal brackets and wires to your teeth and tightening the wires every six weeks. Invisalign uses aligners — removable clear trays that fit over each arch of teeth. Because of this, some people call Invisalign “clear braces.”

Is Invisalign right for me?

Invisalign can treat most types of teeth issues, including:

  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Gap teeth
  • Open bite
  • Crowded teeth

You can also use Invisalign if you still have a mix of baby and permanent teeth. Dr. Stern will explain your specific malocclusion issues and how Invisalign can help.

How does the Invisalign treatment process work?

Dr. Stern performs a dental exam, including a scan that produces 3-D images of your mouth. Then, Dr. Stern uses special ClinCheck® computer software to view your images and create a digital treatment plan.

Dr. Stern submits your treatment plan to the Invisalign lab, where they produce a group of clear aligners for your specific mouth measurements. After a month or so, you’ll return to the office to get your new aligners.

During treatment, you’ll wear the aligners for 22 hours a day. Always remove the aligners to eat, drink, brush, and floss your teeth.

Every 1-2 weeks, you’ll start wearing the next pair of aligners. On average, most people need 20-30 sets of Invisalign aligners to complete their teeth straightening process.

During your treatment, you’ll see Dr. Stern around once every six weeks for a quick checkup. That painless visit ensures that your teeth are moving steadily in the right way.

What are the benefits of Invisalign teeth straightening?

Invisalign teeth straightening has many benefits, including:

  • You can remove aligners for special occasions
  • Painless — no metal to poke and irritate your mouth
  • No food restrictions
  • Clear aligners are virtually invisible
  • Your teeth are easier to clean without metal brackets and wires on them
  • Aligners are easy to care for

Another big advantage of Invisalign is the short treatment time. Most of Dr. Stern’s patients wear Invisalign for a total of 12 months. In many cases, this offers a shorter treatment time than with metal braces.
